My background is in business, sales and marketing, but I've always
wanted to work in fashion. My dad decided, when we were looking at
universities, that a degree in business marketing & management made
more sense than one in fashion design and since he was paying, that's
what I ended up doing. For a while, I even forgot about my original
aspirations, but I always felt like something was missing in my life.
I knew I wanted to work in fashion in some capacity but my inner voice
kept telling me that it wasn't a realistic aspiration. It was really
my boyfriend who convinced me to follow my dreams eventually, we had
talked about it a few times, and he asked me point blank if I wasn't
going to do something about it now, when did I plan to?
My favourite part about being a personal stylist is connecting with
people and getting to the heart of why they want to look and feel a
certain way. So many people look at it as such a superficial
surface-level thing, but it's much deeper than that. We use our
clothes to communicate who we are to those around us, and it's a very
My style icon is Gwen Stefani. I Iove her rock chic vibe and how
put-together she always looks! Her make-up is always on point too! She
looks amazing all the time.
My studded leather floral biker jacket- it's actually surprisingly
versatile and is a great addition to any outfit.
My leather baseball cap- it elevates any casual outfit I throw on and
is great for hiding a bad hair day.
My sparkly crossbody bag- adds sparkle to any outfit I wear and it's a
great hands-free item for my personal shopping days.
Nope! I don't believe in "nothing to wear". I think that there are
some basic outfit combinations that will ALWAYS work no matter what,
and all you have to do is jazz it up with different accessories each
time and you're good to go. That's why it's important to have the
wardrobe essentials close to hand so you can always reach for one of
Everyone should invest in; a good winter coat, a nice handbag and a
watch. These are the pieces that people will first notice when you
walk in somewhere and as a businessperson, I think it's very important
to make a great first impression. These will signal that you are
successful, serious and take great care of yourself and your
My clients are entrepreneurs, mainly female, and relatively new to
the business world. They realise that as their visibility grows, they
are going to need to reflect a certain image to attract their ideal
client and garner respect for their business. As an entrepreneur, you
are ALWAYS representing your brand, so I help people reflect an
authentic brand image wherever they are.
I ask clients to think about what message they want to send to the
outside world and what aspects of their personality and personal brand
they want to communicate. Then I make them choose only the most
important of these aspects and we decide on 3 Style Power words that
will shape their entire image. Mine are; Edgy, Bold & Chic and you'll
see that in everything I do.
My advice for a successful personal styling session is to have a
good idea of what it is you're trying to achieve. A lot of people
don't realise that style is something we all have, we just need to
find it. I can't choose a style for someone or just give them a look
that I think would work, I mean, I could but it's probably not going
to stick because it doesn't come from them. I'd invite people to
consider what styles they like on other people, what colours and
fabrics they are drawn to and how they would like to feel in their
day-to-day look. And to be themselves. Authenticity is key.
My favourite high street brand? Hmmm....there are a few....I
absolutely love Bershka, Sacred Hawk and AllSaints. I'm not sure if
The Kooples would count as highstreet but I love them too.
Trends are something that are great for incorporating into your
wardrobe, but I always say not to spend much money on them because
they might not stick around. Trendy colours of the moment are pastels,
particularly pink, blue and lilac and royal blue is really having a
moment. White boots and white bags are really popular too. Flat mules
and backless loafers also.
& Other Stories has some great ruffle skirts. My favourite is a
black one with a floral pattern and it's absolutely flattering on
everyone I've had trying it on in store!
